Friendship
Home needs volunteers like you - read all the opportunities!
We have opportunities for everyone!
Special Event Volunteers
Not only are special events necessary for
raising needed funding to operate the shelter, but special
events are fun too! The following events are coming up and
we need your help:
• August to October- Pre and Post Event
Volunteers Help make a difference in the Lincoln community
by providing pre and post event office support for Friendship
Home's third annual Safe Quarters drive.
Volunteers will assist the development staff with general
office duties including: data entry, desktop publishing, basic
computer skills, making phone calls, running errands, sorting,
copying documents, preparation of mailings. If your level
of interest is in one or more of these areas and you can volunteer
an hour or two of your time (or more!) we would love to talk
with you! Those wishing to make a long-term volunteer commitment
are encouraged to apply!
• SAFE QUARTERS - This is an exciting one-day volunteer opportunity
to help victims of domestic violence in Lincoln. On September 30th Friendship Home will hold their fifth annual Safe
Quarters drive. More than 1,500 volunteers are needed
to knock on doors to collect spare change and other financial
contributions for Friendship Home. Collection efforts are
made easier due to the large amount of media coverage prior
to the event. Safe Quarters organizers will
match volunteers with preferred neighborhoods on a first-come,
first served basis. It is necessary for you to coordinate
a group of a minimum of eight people to register for this
event. If you cannot organize a group of 8 people, call the
event coordinator at 402-434-0169 for other volunteering opportunities. This
canvassing event is great for youth group projects focusing
on community impact, families, school groups, civic groups
or those wishing to make a difference in the Lincoln community.
A no-cost, post-event celebration will occur after the event.
Music, food and entertainment will be provided. This is a
great family activity!
Shelter Positions
These volunteer opportunities involve working
in the shelter directly with the shelter residents:
Women's Advocate Volunteers
This opportunity involves assisting staff
in providing support to the women.
This could include:
• responding to "request for service" calls,
• checking women into and out of shelter,
• providing one-on-one support to the women,
• helping facilitate a women's support group, or
• general office tasks.
Since our agency is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week,
scheduling for this position is flexible and can be worked
out to fit your personal schedule.
Children's Advocate Volunteers
Children's Advocate volunteer opportunities
include:
• facilitating small groups for kids over the age of
five and providing child care for children under five,
• working in our one-on-one "match" program,
with children ages five and older.
Transportation Volunteers
This opportunity involves helping transport
women or children to and from appointments, groups, or activities.
Transportation is one of the biggest and most common needs
Friendship Home struggles to provide, as most of the women
do not have their own transportation. This is especially true
on Monday-Thursday nights, when we offer support groups for
both current and past residents.
Facilities Volunteers
There are a lot of things that go into making
a house a home. Assistance is needed to keep Friendship Home
safe, sound, and well supplied.
Facility Volunteers aid in:
• various yard-work activities,
• helping with minor shelter repairs,
• picking up and sorting donations, or
• grocery shopping.
The following volunteer opportunities involve working with
staff and the community to support battered women and their
children:
Administrative and Development Volunteers
This opportunity involves:
• helping to organize and staff the Safe Quarters Drive,
Stuff the Bus, Scramble for Safety Golf Tournament or other
Friendship Home events;
• assisting with mailings to raise awareness of Friendship
Home;
• working with the Speakers Bureau;
• creating promotional materials; or
• general office tasks.
