Frequently Asked Questions about Door-to-Door Canvassing

Q. How many people are on a team?

A. We suggest 8 to 10 team members, and that team members work in pairs, i.e. either going to doors together or staying within eyesight of each other. If you have fewer people on your team, we will work with you to assign a smaller precinct.

Q. Can I sign up as an individual, or do I need to have a team?

A. We appreciate how much you care about this issue. We would like to take your contact information. We will very likely need your help.
• As we near the event, we may have teams that need additional help or other individuals without teams. In these cases, we could help arrange for you to consider working together.
• Some teams may cancel on short notice. It will be necessary to have standby volunteers to help cover their precincts.
• We need volunteers for a variety of tasks to prepare and wrap up the event, if you are interested.

Q. How are the areas divided? Can I do my own neighborhood? Can I pick my own area?

A. The city is divided by voting precincts. Team captains may request a specific area of town or neighborhood, and we will assign the neighborhoods on a first come, first served basis. We also appreciate teams who are flexible regarding precinct assignments, as we need those teams to help us meet the goal of knocking on every door. We may also assign teams to collect at local organizations with high traffic flow on event day.

Q. Can children or youth groups participate?

A. The minimum age to go door to door is 9th grade, and high school aged groups should be accompanied by an adult. Younger children may go along with their parents or other responsible adult. In addition, we encourage youth groups to take up collections for the cause and help raise awareness.

Q. How long will it take teams to canvass each area?

A. This will vary based on the number of people on your team, the density of homes in your assigned precinct, and how quickly you go. On average, it takes a team of 10 working in pairs two to three hours to cover a precinct.

Q. How do I register?

A.Call or e-mail the Friendship Home Special Events Coordinator at (402) 434-0167 or tracyh@friendshiphome.org. We will need to know the captain's name, group name (if applicable), home address, phone number, email address, and preferred area of town. Registered team captains will be provided with precinct assignments and event updates.
